English & Work Foundations - AMEP

The Adult Migrant English Program

AMEP logoThe Adult Migrant English Program is an Australian government-funded program that provides 510 hours of FREE English classes and support services to new migrants and refugees. To find out more about the program in your own language.

City East Community College offers a number of ways for you to learn English to suit your individual needs. You can study in the classroom, with the Distance Learning Service or at home with a Volunteer Tutor. You can choose a combination or one of these options. Choose a learning option to meet your settlement needs and goals.

Steps to Enrol

1. Find out if you are eligible

Ring the AMEP office on 9387 6880 with your visa details or visit our office at Level 2, 97 Grafton Street, Bondi Junction, 9am to 5pm or ermail your name and visa number to: info@amepcityeast.com.

2. Register and make an appointment

Visit us with your passport and visa or travel documents or ring on 9387 6880 to make an appointment.

3. Assess your level of English

At the appointment you will need to meet with the assessor who will assess your level of English and discuss your study options and register for Child care if required.

4. Discuss your Study and Settlement needs and plans

After you have been assessed, you will meet with the Pathway Advisor who will give you more information about the AMEP, outline your rights and responsibilities under the program and discuss your study and settlement needs.

5. Start Class

In the first week of class, your teacher will introduce you to the school and its services and outline the course and assessment.

  • Childcare Services - If you are an eligible AMEP (Adult Migrant English Program) client with children under school age, you can access free childcare while you are in class.
  • Free Translation of Documents
  • Pathway Advisor - During your study at an AMEP Centre you can make an appointment with the Pathway Advisor to discuss your goals and settlement needs in Australia.


Classes

Morning Classes

Course Duration

The classes are run in the NSW school terms. Between 9 to 11 weeks.

Times

Monday to Friday 9:15 to 1:30 0r Monday to Thursday 9:00-2:30

Who is it for?

The classes are designed for migrants and refugees who have recently arrived to Australia. We have classes available from absolute beginners to upper-intermediate.

What will I learn?

You will learn English through themes relevant to your settlement, such as learning how speak everyday English, to catch transport, apply for work and understand Australian culture.

Location

Grafton St and Bondi Rd, Bondi Junction.

Evening Classes

Course Duration

The classes are run in the NSW school terms. Between 9 to 11 weeks.

Times

Monday and Wednesday Evenings 5:45 to 9:00

Who is it for?

The classes are designed for migrants and refugees who have recently arrived to Australia and who are working during the day.

What will I learn?

You will learn English through themes relevant to your settlement, such as learning how speak everyday English, to catch transport, apply for work and understand Australian culture.

Location

Grafton St, Bondi Junction. (Map)

English Skills for Study

Course Duration

The classes are run in the NSW school terms. They are usually 9 to 11 weeks.

Times

Morning 9:00 – 2:30 Thursday and Friday OR Evening Monday 5:45-9:00

Who is it for?

For AMEP students who have an intermediate to upper intermediate level of English and wish to improve their study skills to enter Vocational Education at TAFE or another educational institution.

What will I learn?

This course focuses on higher level writing skills, exam skills and presentation skills through educationally based themes.

Location

Bondi Rd, Bondi Junction. (Map)

English Skills for Work

Course Duration

The classes are run in the NSW school terms. They are usually 9 to 11 weeks.

Times

3 days a week Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 9:00- 2:30

Who is it for?

For AMEP students who have an intermediate to uppe intermediate level of English and wish to improve their English skills for work and job seeking.

What will I learn?

The class focuses on the practical skills to increase your employability in the Australian Workplace. These include: telephoning, interview techniques and resume writing. The course also includes project based learning to develop skills such as team work and negotiation in the Australian workplace.

Bondi Rd, Bondi Junction. (Map)

Distance Learning

Course Duration

Individual tuition. 1 hour per week

Times

Negotiated by you and the Distance Team Leader

Who is it for?

For AMEP students who cannot get to the classroom or prefer to study individually or for students in class who wish to study extra English

What will I learn?

You will learn English through themes relevant to your settlement, such as learning how speak everyday English, catch transport, apply for work and understand Australian Culture. You will also be able to negotiate content with the teacher according to your specific needs.

Location

By computer through Skype or by telephone at your home or a mutually agreed location.

Home Tutor

Course Duration

1 hour per week

Times

Negotiated by you and the tutor through the Pathway Advisor.

Who is it for?

For AMEP Students who cannot get to the classroom or prefer to study individually or students who are studying less than 10 hours AMEP classes a week.

What will I learn?

You will learn English through themes relevant to your settlement, such as learning how speak everyday English, catch transport, apply for work and understand Australian Culture. You will also be able to negotiate content with the tutor according to your specific needs.

Location

At your home or a mutually agreed location.

Bilingual Class Mandarin (Outreach Class)

Course Duration

The classes are run in the NSW school terms. They are usually 9 to 11 weeks.

Times

Fridays and Saturdays 9:30 to 12:45.

Who is it for?

Mandarin speakers with no English.

What will I learn?

You will learn basic beginner English, starting with the alphabet and sounds of English and numbers, progressing to simple, everyday interaction. The class is based on the pre-CSWE curriculum.

Location

Zetland.

Green Square / Zetland (Outreach Class)

Course Duration

The classes are run in the NSW school terms. They are usually 9 to 11 weeks.

Times

Saturdays 9:30 – 12:45

Who is it for?

Students who have knowledge of the alphabet and the basic sounds of English, numbers and can answer basic personal information questions in English.

What will I learn?

You will learn beginner English based around themes relevant to settlement, including conducting basic conversations and transactions in English. This is a non-bilingual class.

Location

Zetland.

Maroubra (Outreach Class)

Course Duration

The classes are run in the NSW school terms. They are usually 9 to 11 weeks.

Times

Saturday mornings (CSWE1 & CSWE2) 9:30 to 12:45

Who is it for?

Students in the local area who do not wish to or are unable to attend full-time classes.

What will I learn?

You will learn English through themes relevant to your settlement, such as learning how speak everyday English, catch transport, apply for work and understand Australian Culture.

Location

Maroubra Junction.

SLPET – Settlement Language Pathways to Employment and Training Program

The SLPET program is for AMEP clients who are finishing their AMEP hours and wish to participate in specific workplace program. In your SLPET course you will learn about Australian workplace language, practices and culture, gain valuable work experience and participate in vocational training.

Eligibility

To be considered for the SLPET courses you will need to meet the following criteria:

  • you are a current or ex-AMEP client with at least 1 hour of your AMEP entitlement (of 510 free* hours of English) remaining,
  • are currently enrolled in CSWE Level III or are towards the end of CSWE Level II, but have not yet received CSWE Certificate III (i.e., have not yet graduated),

*are ready to work or study.

Participation in SLPET courses will depend on the availability of courses for the specific area of study chosen.

Duration
  • 140 – 160 hours of vocation-specific English language tuition,
  • 40 – 60 hours of work experience in an industry related to the course of your choice,
  • nationally accredited vocational training on some courses

SLPET courses offered include: Business Administration, Warehousing and RF Scanning , Workplace skills for Qualified professionals , Childcare , Hospitality, Administration and Financial Services, Retail Operations, Community Services Aged care and Customer Service

Skill Focus Classes

Course Duration

Often run in the school holidays or one day per week throughout the term.

In the AMEP at CECC we regularly run short skill focus classes according to the needs of the students. Regular skill focus classes include:
