Stand Up Comedy

Get in touch with your comic persona as you learn to create and deliver the material that leaves an audience bellyaching. Gain practical tools for writing and performing comedy as you learn how to set up and deliver that winning punchline.

This course will help you acquire the basic techniques of comedy writing and presentation and then gives you an opportunity to try out all you’ve learned in an open mic venue at the end of the course.

About Rob McHugh
Rob McHugh started doing stand up comedy at age 18 and has been a regular performer on the Australian comedy scene for over 25 years. He has done every type of show, from Christmas parties for an outlaw bikers club to high profile corporate after dinner engagements

He was the resident M.C. at the Sydney Comedy store for a number of years and has had many television appearances as well as numerous writing credits including the Doug Mulray breakfast radio show and for television; ‘Candid Camera’, ‘The Don Lane Show’ and 'You’ve Got to be Joking'.

In 2010, Rob and his City East Community College students were the basis for the SBS four part television series Comedy School .

Learning Outcomes

  • gained an understanding of the concept of a comic persona and identify their own comic persona;
  • developed skills necessary to write good comedy material that compliments their comic performance;
  • acquired basic microphone and stage presentation techniques; and
  • experienced performing and testing of material in front of their peers.
