Sewing Workshop

A hands-on sewing course to help you make cutting edge adults' or children garments. Work at your own speed and ability to produce a garment using a commercial pattern. Learn how to read and understand patterns and sewing instruction sheets, tips and tricks for good garmet construction and fitting, gain or improve your cutting and sewing techniques (including straight, zig zag and stretch stiches) and have fun as you experiment with fabric layout and design. You just need enthusiasm: we’ll show you the rest.

Experienced sewers are welcome to join and work at their own pace on individual projects.

Materials if starting a new project
Sewing Machine (optional) - it is preferable to learn on your own machine. College machines are available to use; however, you may need to share with other students.
Manual for your sewing machine (optional -see above)
Pattern: Beginners should choose a simple pattern – straight skirt, draw string pants/shorts, sleeveless & collarless dress, top or vest. Please note: Paper patterns are not sized in the same way as clothing bought in stores. You will need to take your measurements then check the measurements on the pattern to ensure you are buying the right size. Paper patterns are sized far smaller, generally: it’s not unusual for a size 8 person to need a size 14 or 16 paper pattern.
Fabric: The reverse of your pattern envelope will tell you how much fabric you need to buy. We recommend choosing a cotton, rayon or linen fabric for the first garment. N.B. Avoid stripes, checks, velvets and soft flimsy fabrics and fabrics with any stretch in them.
Thread (one reel to match your fabric and one in contrasting colour)
Fabric scissors and scissors for cutting paper
An unpicker
Tape measure
Tailor’s chalk
Glass/plastic head pins in a pin cushion
Needles – Hand sewing
Bernina bobbin (omit if you choose to bring your own machine)
