Bookkeeping Basics

A course designed for people wishing to gain an understanding of bookkeeping and the practical skills necessary to organise their books. Learn about debits and credits, the classification of accounts and the basics of GST for small business. The information covered in this course is a prerequisite for the computer accounting MYOB course.

A certificate is awarded on completion of this course provided you have attained a satisfactory understanding of course content and attended a minimum 75% of course sessions.

Learn about accounting terms and functions
Understand the difference between debits and credits
Understand double entry accounting
Compile a General Journal
Set up and compile a Purchases Journal
Set up and compile a Sales Journal
Compile a Cash Receipts Journal
Compile a Cash Payments Journal
Assign a month’s transactions to the appropriate journals and complete these journals

Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, the student will have:
Understood accounting jargon
Understood the double entry accounting principle
Differentiated between the different types of assets, liabilities and equity
Differentiated between revenue and expenses
Understood and demonstrated the ability to assign a transaction to a specific journal and complete such journals
Learnt how to prepare a BAS for the ATO.
