Pottery

This course has no current classes. Please join the waiting list.

This course is designed to be both creative and fun. The first few weeks are spent learning basic hand building techniques in clay, including rolling coils and slabs and the use of molds. Design and decoration methods covered include use of texture, painting with under glaze colours, and glaze techniques. In the second half of the course you may choose from set projects, develop your own project, or try your hand at the pottery wheel.
PLEASE NOTE: The course is suitable for beginners and intermediate students, and all are welcome to re-enrol and continue developing skills. While some wheelwork is involved, students wanting to do wheelwork only, should join the Pottery: Wheelwork course

Materials

  • Please bring a pen/pencil and note pad.
  • Wear old clothes or bring an apron or old shirt.
  • Merryn will explain what materials are required for the course at the first class. Tools required will cost approx $5-$10, clay is available at cost each night, there will also be a charge incurred should you wish to glaze and fire your finished products.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course student will have:

  • gained an understanding of the full ceramic process, from forming pieces in plastic clay to decorating, glazing and firing in the kiln;
  • created at least one pot at every two lessons, most likely more
  • learned a varied and interesting range of construction and decorating techniques to assist in the design of their own work.
