Oil Painting
Learning to paint is learning how to see things in a new way. During this course you will achieve this through a variety of painting exercises using different subject matter: still-life, figure and landscape. It is recommended that students have basic drawing skills before joining this class. Course covers: Playing in paint – introduction to basic techniques, experimenting with colour, still life, self-portrait, landscape painting.
Materials
- Canvas board or primed masonite (A4 size)
- Linseed oil
- Turps or substitute if allergic to turpentine (ideally mineral turps for cleaning brushes and pure gum turps for painting)
- Flat bristle brushes of various sizes (0.5 to 2.5)
- 1 x fine round brush
- Palette
- Palette knife
- One stick of charcoal
- Rags
- Newspaper
- Minimum colours in tubes: titanium white, ivory black; yellow ochre, lemon yellow, cadmium red (medium), ultramarine blue and burnt sienna / optional colours: raw umber, alizarin crimson, cadmium yellow (medium), viridian green, cobalt blue and pthallic blue.
PLEASE NOTE: all colours can be student quality, which is much cheaper than artist quality tubes.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course participants will have:
- gained and understanding of OH&S in relation to using oil paints
- learned how to mix and appy oil paints to canvas
- learned paint handling techniques using a variety of brush sizes and gesture
- gained an understanding of drawing and colour in oil painting
- learned how to use paint materials in an economical manner.
