AMEP - Adult Migrant English Program
What is the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP)?
The Adult Migrant English Program is an Australian Governmen program designed to help adult migrants learn Engllish and settle successfully in Australia.
Am I eligible?
If you have arrived in Australia recently, or in the last 5 years, you may be able to claim up to 510 hours of tuition, free. For more information call 9387 7400 and ask to speak to

18 years of age or older (some 15-17 year olds may be eligible if they have not enrolled in the Australian school system).
A holder of a permanent visa
From a non-English speaking background
If you are proficient in spoken and written English you will not be eligible.
What should I do first
You should register for classes within 6 months of the date of the commencement of your visa and start your first class within one year.

COURSE DETAILS
AMEP English courses are available at our Adult Education Centre, 98 Bondi Road, starting Monday 30 January 2012. Choose a learning option to meet your settlement needs and goals. You can attend day or evening classes, or a weekly Saturday class. Students also get free access to an online learning program in our computer room or at home. The English content is based on the Certificates in Spoken and Written English (CSWE), covering reading and writing skills for everyday life, speaking and listening.
Daytime courses
9.15am – 1.30pm Monday to Friday, courses at all levels, 20 hours per week
Evening courses
5.45pm to 9.00pm Monday and Wednesday, courses at all levels, 6 hours per week
To confirm your eligibility and enrol you into a course, we will need to know:
your name, as it appears on your passport
your visa number and/or sub-class
Are the courses free?
Yes, these courses are free, if you are eligible. If you are not eligible, the City East Community College offers a wide range of English course at low cost.
Do I need to attend an interview?
Once we have determined that you are eligible to participate you will need to enrol by phone or in person here at 98 Bondi Road before you attend a class. Our AMEP staff will help you and advise you of what you need. You can bring somebody with you, if you need assistance or help with translation. A trained assessor will determine which class and which level of tuition is best for you. A pathway counsellor will work with you to set learning and career pathway plans.
